DOS WIN Notes 2

 

1.    What files are needed to boot to DOS - IO.sys, MSDOS.sys, and command.com

2.    Two types of DOS commands - internal and external

3.    DIR command switches - /A=all +-H (hidden) S (system) D (directories only) R (read only); /O=sort order +-N (A-Z                 Z-A   by filename) E (A-Z Z-A by extension) D (by date) S (by size); /S=all subdirectories; P=by page; W=wide

4.    Changing file attributes - ATTRIB +-A=archive, R=read only, H=hidden, S=system

5.    DOSKEY is a TSR program

6.    How many primary partitions can you have on a HD -  3 primary and also one extend that can have up to 23 logical  drives. One one primary partition can be set as active.

7.    FORMAT switches - /S=transfers system files (makes it bootable), /Q=quick format, /U=unconditional format

8.    Before DOS 3.3 only one partition with max size of 32 MB was possible

9.    After DOS 3.3 two partitions (primary and extended) could be used and max partition size is 2 GB

10.    Number of possible logical drives - 23 (C reserved for first partition on first drive, A & B reserved for disk drives

11.    Is it possible to delete an extended partition with logical drives - no, logical drives must be deleted first

12.    First 640 KB of system memory is Conventional Memory

13.    Memory area 641 KB to 1024 (1 MB) is the Upper Memory Area (this area contains ROM BIOS)

14.    Expanded memory resides in the UMA area 641 KB to 1024 (1 MB) and is addressed in 64 KB page frames (made of four 16 KB pages)
15.    Memory above 1 MB is called extended memory
16.    High Memory is the first 64 KB of extended memory (1024 - 1088 KB)

17.    HIMEM.sys is the extended memory manager

18.    EMM386.sys is the expanded memory manager and utilizes extended memory to simulate expanded memory

19.    *.sys files go in config.sys and *.com/bat files go in autoexec.bat

20.    You must load HIMEM.sys before you can specify DOS=HIGH. You must load HIMEM.sys and EMM386.sys before you can specify DOS=UMB

21.    To transfer system files to a formatted floppy use the SYS A: command

22.    WIN 3.x is a GUI NOT an Operating System

23.    The 3 core component files for Windows - Kernel file, user.exe, & GDI.exe

24.    The most important system initialization files are win.ini and system.ini (control.ini, progman.ini, & winfile.ini are the other 3)

39.    Each MS-DOS application has its own virtual machine

40.    What is a registered program - one that is in the Add/Remove Programs properties

41.    WIN 95 compliant programs must have - setup.exe (to install) and unistall.exe (to uninstall)

42.    The registry uses two files to store information - user.dat (user profiles) and system.dat (hardware profiles)

43.    The system administrator uses System Policies to control the W95 environment on a user-by-user or system-by system basis

44.    What file is very useful in troubleshooting modem problems - modemlog.txt
